#MonthOfSpooks – Angel Heart 2

Angel Heart is a 1950’s set hard boiled crime drama, right down to saxophone theme and voice-over. This is a supernatural film-noir, just without any real scares.

Mickey Rourke is surprisingly good, and actually gets better as the film progresses, as New York private investigator Harry Angel as he goes in search of Johnny Favorite at the behest of Louis Cyphre (a remarkably restrained performance from Robert De Niro). The investigation leads him to New Orleans and Harry gets embroiled in a large amount of voodoo related deaths and intrigue.

Whilst not overly supernatural it does have some powerful elements but it doesn’t over play them and the ending tries to bring it back into focus, making you think about the whole film in a different way. This is a really good film, if not quite as scary as I would have hoped. Definitely worth a watch if you haven’t seen it already.

I was really impressed by it, especially Rourke. De Niro is in it just about the perfect amount, much more would have been too much.
