Filmish by Edward Ross

In my attempt to learn more about film and the studies therein I decided to give this book a go, with the main idea being that I would understand a graphic novel much easier than an overpowering, daunting pure text book.

I have to say that this is a very accessible book. Everything is nicely laid out, it doesn’t try to cram too much information into its pages but does explore the chapters in a decent amount of depth.

It breaks the book down into 7 chapters focused on:

The Body

The Eye

Sets &  Architecture

Voice &  Language

Power & Ideology

Technology & technophobia

All of which are explored via Edward’s graphic persona interweaving into the scenes of the movies that he is talking about. It’s a nice touch.

I’m sure there is plenty more to learn about in this field but this has been a good first step for me to grasp some of the more common concepts that are discussed within film
